Chevron condenada a pagar 8 mil millones de dólares en Ecuador

La Justicia ecuatoriana ordenó a la compañía petrolera Chevron el pago de 8 mil 200 millones de dólares por daños ambientales. La empresa afirmó que apelará el fallo. Lo calificó como “ilegítimo e inaplicable”.

El juez de la Corte provincial de Sucumbíos, Nicolás Zambrano, dictó la sentencia luego de 17 años de litigios.

Comunidades indígenas ecuatorianas iniciaron el proceso en 2003 en tribunales de Estados Unidos. Una década después el caso fue trasladado a Ecuador.

Las comunidades denunciaron a Texaco por derramar residuos tóxicos entre 1964 y 1990, que generaron daños a la salud y al ambiente. Chevron compró a la firma Texaco en 2001 mientras continuaba el litigio.

La compañía confirmó que apelará el fallo. Indicó que tomaron medidas en Estados Unidos y en tribunales internacionales para suspender la aplicación de la sentencia.

La semana pasada, un panel de la Corte Permanente de Arbitraje de La Haya prohibió en forma temporal la aplicación de cualquier sentencia emitida por el tribunal ecuatoriano contra Chevron.

Al mismo tiempo, un juez de Nueva York, en Estados Unidos, también emitió una orden temporal para impedir cobrar compensaciones a la compañía.

Las comunidades indígenas ecuatorianas exigían una reparación económica superior. Sin embargo, el abogado demandante, Pablo Fajardo, se manifestó conforme al señalar que "esta historia comienza a cambiar".
