Obama apoya inmunidad del Vaticano en casos de pederastia en Estados Unidos

El Papa Benedicto XVI y otros jerarcas de la Iglesia solicitaron inmunidad, en el juicio contra religiosos acusados de pederastia en EE.UU., petición que fue acatada por el Gobierno de Obama. En tanto, los demandantes acusan al Vaticano de no haber expulsado al sacerdote sindicado de pederasta o al menos haberlo sancionado o apartado.

El Gobierno del presidente estadounidense, Barack Obama, pidió a la Corte Suprema de su país otorgar al Vaticano inmunidad en los juicios de sacerdotes acusados de haber cometido abusos sexuales contra menores de edad en Estados Unidos.

Obama realizó esta petición mientras que las víctimas, después de años de permanecer en silencio por los traumas generados, reclaman justicia.

La Corte estadounidense desarrolla el caso de una víctima que mantiene el anonimato, quien afirma haber sido abusado sexualmente en la década de 1960, en Portland, Oregón, (noroeste) por un cura irlandés que ya había sido acusado de pederastia en Irlanda y posteriormente en Chicago.

En torno a ese caso, el Vaticano introdujo un recurso para evitar que el Papa Benedicto XVI y sus cardenales sean convocados para declarar ante tribunales estadounidenses por el caso.

Una corte de apelaciones había suprimido la inmunidad del Vaticano en el caso del cura acusado de pederastia en Oregón.

El demandante acusa al Vaticano de no haber expulsado al cura o al menos haberlo sancionado o apartado de su rango religioso luego de los delitos que cometió.

Como el caso puede afectar las relaciones diplomáticas de Estados Unidos con el Vaticano, nueve magistrados de la máxima instancia pidieron opinión al Gobierno de Obama en torno al expediente del clérigo.

Los abogados de la Casa Blanca recomendaron a la Corte Suprema contentarse con "anular la decisión" de la corte de apelaciones y pedirle reexaminar el caso, que "no merece un examen completo", según su argumentación.

Datos oficiales ofrecidos por el Vaticano refirieren que se han investigado a tres mil curas entre 2001 y 2009 por casos de abusos cometidos en el último medio siglo, pero sólo se ha condenado a 300 de ellos y expulsado del clero a un 10 por ciento de los que fueron declarados culpables.
